Recent GOES satellite imagery shows a potent atmospheric river
event moving inland across California today, and the moisture
associated with this will steadily move inland across the
Intermountain West through Friday. Additional rainfall totals on
the order of 2 to 4 inches are expected across portions of
California, with some isolated 5+ inch totals possible through
Friday night. Several feet of snow is likely for the highest
elevations of the Sierra, and 1-2 feet expected for the highest
mountains ranges of the Intermountain West and eventually across
the central Rockies. Once this storm system emerges over the
central/southern Plains Saturday, very heavy rainfall and severe
thunderstorms are forecast to develop from the Deep South to the
Tennessee and Ohio River valleys with widespread 3-6+ inch
rainfall totals expected, mainly from eastern Arkansas to southern
Kentucky.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 700 PM PST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
