At 900 AM EST...An area of surface low pressure (1002 mb, or 29.6
inches of mercury) was located to the north of the Great Lakes in
Canada near the southern Coast of Hudson Bay under a stagnant
upper-low, with a high pressure ridge positioned to the southwest
over the northern Plains. This pattern has resulted in a tight
pressure gradient and strong northwesterly to westerly winds
across the Great Lakes Region, with the frigid flow over the
warmer lake waters leading to intense bands of lake effect snow.
National Weather Service Doppler Radar currently shows these lake
effect bands occurring south and east of all of the Great Lakes.

Intense lake-effect snow bands are forecast for favorable downwind
locations of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario as the
pressure gradient pattern producing steady, cold winds over the
warmer lake waters remains in place through at least Monday. This
includes the UP of Michigan, northwestern Michigan, northeastern
Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania, and portions of western/Upstate
New York, with more intense snow currently expected to linger
longest for northeastern Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania, and
western New York. These intense bands will result in deep snow,
likely measured in several feet, as well as drifting snow in the
hardest hit areas. Travel will remain very difficult to impossible
for the hardest hit areas.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 1000 PM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
